Designer Digs: Create a Classroom That Students Love to Be In

The design and décor of my classroom has always been of high importance to me. Before I ever started teaching at my current school, I went and took measurements of my future room and carefully designed each bulletin board, shelf, and space within the room. Initially, things like color scheme, lighting, and furniture placement may seem unimportant in regards to learning. However, all of these factors play a significant role in not only how our students learn, but also how we teach.

Lighting is an absolute top priority for me in both my home and my classroom. I am a firm believer that overhead fluorescent lighting creates the worst learning environment for young students! Susan Fitzell and her research fully support and explain the importance of natural lighting in the classroom. I keep a copy of her research on hand for anyone who gives me trouble about having lamps versus overhead lights!
