As someone who believes that children need to be taught empathy, I appreciate how this author reflects on the true definitions of empathy. Personally, I have found that young students need to learn the term Empathy and understand examples of empathy, through activities like role play.
I have used these activities in my own classroom and love how they empower students to utilize "5 Skills to Develop Empathy" in order to practice showing empathy towards others. There is also an excellent homework and self-reflective component.
I believe in teaching empathy, but find it is not always easy for kids to truly understand what empathy is. This is why I like that this lesson has students practice what it means to put themselves in another's shoes and think of how they would feel.
I have used these empathy activities with my students. They are engaging and can be adapted to any grade at the elementary level. I have used the Deciding on Empathy lesson many times and love that students get to role play Empathy situations.
