Smart Kids Aren’t Born; They’re Made – Setting the Stage for the New School Year or Semester

This collection was inspired by the Lewis and Virginia Eaton Professor of Psychology at Stanford named Carol Dweck whose extensive research was detailed in her book Mindset: The New Psychology of Success (2006). It will help teachers meet the goal of creating a positive classroom environment centered on effort and continual learning at the start of the school year or new semester. It is focused on the idea that intelligence can change and that people are neither born smart nor dumb.

    Reading Strategy: Question Formulation Technique

    Step 3: The QFT Reading Strategy is an effective pre-reading strategy that helps students set a purpose for reading the article in the collection. Given a statement from the text that the teacher pre-selected as the Question Focus, students learn to ask, categorize, and prioritize questions prior to reading the text. The priority questions will also guide students during the reading and will extend their learning if they have to do further research.

    Step 2: The Visual Text is a useful follow-up to the online survey because students read the behaviors associated with each mindset and compare the tendencies of a person with a growth mindset versus a person with a fixed mindset. This gives an explanation to their survey results as they recognize their own behaviors that fall under each type of mindset.
