Yes, Yes, Yes! Let's add coding to our classrooms. Instead of passively watching something on the computer, kids can MAKE the computer do something!

Scratch as basic drag and drop programming to create games, animations, and more! This is an introduction to scratch and gives an overview of how the program works. My colleagues are always talking to me about scratch and although I have not used it personally, my students who have, rave about it constantly.

Khan Academy is great STEM resource to be used in the classroom and at home. Check out this video about Los Altos District implementation of Khan Academy into their schools. I personally integrate Khan into my classroom daily and loved the way I could monitor students progress without having to check on them one on one.

This is a very interesting article about the state of utah partnering with code.org. I have implemented code.org in my classroom, but it's awesome to see what an impact can be made with district or in this case, STATE-wide partnerships.

    5 minute read
    Ashley McGrath says:
Of course, with new technology and implementation, comes a huge cost. As an administrator, I had the huge challenge of financing all these programs for every classroom. I found that purchasing chromebooks for all my students was the most cost-effective although some of my colleagues have chosen to go with the ipad route. It has not been difficult for me to amp up the enthusiasm, but the PD for all of my staff has also been a challenge. In the end, the student progress and monitoring, less time s

    5 minute read
    Ashley McGrath says:
This article really reminded me of how much technology impacts our children outside of the classroom. By using technology in the classroom, we can shift the focus and make technology more of an asset. Using technology in the classroom can really help us shape our children into better "digital citizens." I really like this idea of digital citizenship.

ABCUSD's Reading Plus Program Delivers Excellent Results

    5 minute read
    Ashley McGrath says:
Reading Plus is sort of like the extended version of Lexia. Students can use reading plus after they have mastered their basic reading skills from fourth grade to high school. Reading plus focuses a lot more on non-fiction reading which some of my students have found less interesting, but it gives students the option to choose topics they are interested in such as sports or animals, which amps up the interest level.

Lexia Learning Releases Lexia Reading Core5 for Students of All Abilities in Grades Pre-K-5

    5 minute read
    Ashley McGrath says:
Lexia Core 5 is a phonics skills program that gives individualized learning paths to students. I recently implemented Lexia Core 5 into my classroom daily. The best part of the program is actually giving students access to use the program at home. I feel my students prevented the "summer slide" where students come back after summer losing reading progress by using Lexia Core 5 at home during summer.
