    5 minute read
    Billy McGrath says:
When working with familiar genres, introducing a new piece of music can be easy, but when exploring new sounds it helps to keep the basics in mind. This brief PDF provides an outline for introducing a new piece of music to students which when working with a brand new genre suddenly becomes a challenge in itself. I find it is helpful to review this guide as I put together any lesson plan for a new piece.

This is a great activity for introducing students to the idea of found sounds and music. To use the full lesson plan you will need computers for student pairs/triples to go to the touch tone applet site. Ending the class with the 'make your instrument activity and performance' is a great finale.

This is a well thought out lesson plan with worksheets and links to all the necessary resources to have a successful introduction to Gamelan music and basic improvisation.

Definitely have to start the collection with this resource- if you have want to introduce your students to new forms of music, but have struggled with getting them to appreciate it, this is the lesson plan for you. It includes a nice formal presentation of all the ideas that come with trying to listen to "weird" music, and will help guide students toward being able to better break down and describe different aspects.
