Favorite InDesign Tutorials

I'm responsible for teaching publication design to high school students and I really enjoy teaching the class due to the creative nature of the course. I use Adobe's InDesign as my primary teaching tool as it is the industry standard for publication design. I've collected some interesting lessons that my students have enjoyed and they include designing magazine covers, magazine pages and resumes. Also, I've included some resources that teach basic InDesign skills and typography.

A large part of mastering InDesign is understanding the type-related features which are incredibly powerful.  This video is part of the Lynda.com “Typography” course and explores the “typography options, type-related features, and type-specific preferences of Adobe InDesign.”  This first video is free and part of a the larger course that comes with the subscription to Lynda.com.

In my Publication Design course we spend a significant amount of time designing different types and styles of pages with InDesign. I ask my students to watch this 9 minute video as explains how to create a simple magazine page using InDesign. The video demonstrates how to use the wire frame tool, add text columns and other tips for mastering text layout. You'll be amazed what students can produce with some simple instruction.

My students often tell me that the magazine cover project we undertake in my publication design class is their favorite project of the year. I love this 50 minute YouTube video as it does an excellent job of demonstrating how to use both InDesign and Photoshop to create a realistic Magazine Cover. Students will learn how to use Photoshop to crop an image for their magazine cover. Additionally, they'll learn how to use the same fonts (typeface) found on popular magazine titles.

If your using Adobe products I recommend that you sign up for Adobe's Education Exchange which provides free lessons and tutorials. One of my favorite lessons is the "Design a Creative Resume" tutorial that includes detailed step-by-step instructions and a template. Students can create a professional looking template they can use and improve on for many years to come.

TastyTuts provides a multitude of great tutorials for Adobe products complete with many learning resources including font files, templates, documents and videos. A great introductory course is their series for beginners which has learners up-and-running with InDesign in no time. This course covers everything from document setup, placing images, using text and publishing the final document. I highly recommend this course as it's not only thorough but has many extras.
