Annotation Techniques for High Schoolers

When I show students a book I've read the first thing they notice is how much I've marked up my book. I underline, highlight, circle, and make notes in the margins. There are a number of different ways to annotate a text, but regardless what technique you use, annotating a text is a vital tool to teach your students in order to encourage close reading of a text and facilitate critical thinking.
