Understanding the Growth Mindset

How can you help your students improve their potential? You can teach them about fixed and growth mindset and how they can develop their growth mindset and get out of the rut of the self-fulfilling prophecy that they might find themselves in. However, be careful that you don't just trade in one set of strategies for another; you really need to understand how growth mindset works--and explain it to your students--so you don't all find yourselves right back at the starting point.

When I returned to college, I was a grandmother. One day, I left a difficult class feeling so defeated and beaten down. I began to ask myself why I thought I could possibly go back to college at my age!!! I sat down in the cafeteria at school and I noticed a mural on the wall of former students at their graduating ceremony. I saw people of all ages, sizes, and ethnics. I saw a girI in a wheelchair! I asked myself, what do they have that I don't? I told myself that I was made of the same stuff they were and if they could do it, surely I could too. That realization was life changing for me!!! I share this story with my students to encourage them.
